Los padres de Cristina Esquivel, una geriatra a la que han encontrado estrangulada en su piso de Madrid, contratan al detective Arturo Zarco para que encuentre al asesino. Lo que desean es que inculpe a Yalal, albañil marroquí con el que estaba casada la muerta, y que tiene la custodia de la hija de ambos. Zarco es un detective muy poco convencional; cuarentón, gay, y estrechamente ligado a Paula, su ex mujer, a la que cuenta y con la que discute por teléfono las vicisitudes de la investigación y los pormenores de sus fascinaciones eróticas. El forcejeo dialéctico entre Zarco y Paula queda interrumpido por el diario de Luz, una de las vecinas de la geriatra asesinada, y madre de Olmo, el jovencito que fascina y perturba a Zarco. Un relato interfiere en el otro, y el encanto y la seducción de lo reconocible se suspenden. Queda también en suspenso el clímax del desvelamiento, y el lector se ve obligado a reflexionar sobre el sentido de la interferencia.
Black, black, black es una espléndida novela negra que puede leerse como tal; pero también como otra cosa, puesto que Sanz propone una ficción donde la violencia inexplicable acaba ajustándose al razonamiento lógico y lo «imperceptible» sale a la luz con la potencia de ese «siniestro familiar» del que hablaba Freud. Y ésta es la concepción, política y retórica, que sustenta esta novela policíaca inteligente, divertida, subversiva.
